Overview: This training is meant to allow flexibility in attending one day or both days - Each day offers it's own teaming objectives so choose what is important to you!

    Workshop Information:

Complies with 6 hour Law and Ethics requirements for Continuing Education required by BBS.  The two-day course complies with the BBS 12-hour course requirement to be eligible to retake the CA law and ethics exam.  This is not an exam prep class.  The Friday Law and Ethics for Supervisors complies with the 6 hour Law and Ethics requirements for Supervisor's Continuing Education required by the BBS.
Choice of 6 hours by coming to FRIDAY ONLY CLASS or SATURDAY ONLY CLASS or 12 hours by coming to BOTH DAYS.

Day 1 Law and Ethics for Supervisors:

This workshop is intended to provide an overview of statutory and ethical standards which apply to the supervision of pre-licensed marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers and professional clinical counselors. The course will include a review of various statutory changes which went into effect on January 1, 2019, pursuant to the passage of AB 93. We will also discuss the application of legal and ethical standards to various problems that are commonly encountered by supervisors.

Additional regulatory changes concerning the topic of supervision are anticipated in the future.  At the time of this workshop, it is not known exactly when such changes will occur.  There will be some discussion during the workshop concerning changes that are anticipated, and CAMFT will offer further information regarding this topic as it becomes available.

This workshop is six hours in length.  It satisfies the six-hour continuing education requirement for supervisors of aspiring marriage and family therapists, and professional clinical counselors.  For individuals who plan to supervise associate clinical social workers, the workshop provides six of the fifteen required hours of continuing education in supervision.  The workshop may also be used to fulfill a portion of the requirements for becoming a CAMFT certified supervisor, if that is your intent.

There will also be some discussion of selected legal and ethical issues that are relevant to supervision of pre-licensed therapists, such as: Scope of competency, scope of practice, standard of care, advertising and employment-related issues.

The specific content that is discussed, and the amount of time that is allotted to a particular issue may vary, depending on the needs of attendees, and other factors.

Examples of treatment scenarios, and/or complaints to licensing boards and ethics committees may be used to illustrate the issues being discussed.

Day 1 Law and Ethics (Standard):

Laws, ethics, morals, and values in psychotherapy

Doing what's right in therapy involves much more than legal compliance. It requires active consideration of what is best for your client, and why. We'll review recent legal and ethical changes in the profession, and take a more advanced look (using case examples) of what drives our decision-making with professional standards don't offer specific guidance.

Day 2 Law and Ethics (Standard):

    Meaningful policies and practices

If you see paperwork as a chore, you have a great opportunity. Your policies and practices should facilitate your work, making the rest of your job easier. We'll spend the day reviewing specific policies and practices that may be ripe for updates, including:

      •  Professional will
      •  Privacy policy and HIPAA compliance
      •  Emotional Support Animal letter policy
      •  Policy on fees for non-clinical services (e.g., court testimony)
      •  New topics for informed consent
      •  Technology and social media policies
We'll discuss specific examples of these policies, and how they establish legal and ethical compliance in your practice.
